Various Artists - E tu vivrai nel terrore - 2000

One of the most surprising Cds for the publishers of progVisions was Morte Macabre’s impressive "Symphonic Holocaust", a revision of classic terror movies in a progressive style that was one of the revelations of the end of last decade. The idea was very interesting and could be used more, so without a single doubt, the Black Widow factory decided to dedicate a double tribute Cd tribute to terror movies. This Italian label knows their job and for this double Cd they made an effort to have the cream of the Italian progressive crop, as well as especial guests as the Japanese Ars Nova, Morte Macabre (they had to be here!!) or the excellent Somnambulist. The result is simply marvelous. It balances the lack of a booklet in the Cd with an 80-page book in which, apart from an exhaustive review of the history of terror movies with pictures and data, plenty of information of the bands is provided (members, releases) as well as of the terror movies selected. The participants in this tribute had the opportunity to recreate fragments of the soundtracks corresponding to the movies, or to compose their own songs inspired by the particular movie. In both cases, the result is excellent 99% of the time.

Making a quick review of both Cds we see featured most styles in prog rock, in a more or less orthodox way, and always with the unmistakable style of Black Widow (70’s sounds 70´s, psychedelics, hammond's, etc). From the menacing "Intro" (1.35) recited by Eugenio Mucci, we can make ourselves an idea of what we are going to listen. Death SS make us shiver with "Ave Satani" (3:23) a song from "The Prophecy". Tenebre carries out a spectacular showcase of restlessness with "Where Dreams and Nightmares Collide" (6:06). The always surprising Northwinds, with their psych-hard-rock 70 sound attacks with "Mask of Satan" (10:33), a great but not fearful piece. Malombra makes us feel real fear with "Devils" (5:23), a small atmospheric nightmare of sopranos and souls in pain. Akron lowers the quality level a bit with "Il Mulino delle Donne di Pietra" (5:37), very well orchestrated but with some throat-rasping vocals that become bothering -although, that is true, they are scary-. Al Festa raise the quality and terror feeling with the keyboards-based "Candles in the Night" (4:34) that is followed by the energetic and shifting "Phenomena" of Wounded Knee. Presence leave me unsatisfied with "The Exorcist" (8:48), well structured, but too long. "Mater Tenebrarum" (2:42) by Iconae is another small mysterious marvel of organs and soprano voices in Latin, while the psychedelic kings Sun Dial make an extraordinary and risky job of "Theme from Psychomania" (5:09). Heavy doom rhythms and disemboweling vocals are the proposal of God. Zila for "Il Compagni di Baal" (5:05). By the end of the first Cd, there are two of the best pieces in the tribute. The impressive A Piedi Nudi in "The House delle Finestre che Ridono" (6:14), a textbook of quality classic progressive rock, and the equally interesting Standarte, with the disturbing "Necropolis" (9:18), a really excellent execution and arrangements.

The second Cd begins in an equally spectacular way with Claudio Simonetti and "LV-426" (2:57). Ars Nova show that they are one of the better quality bands in the world scene. "Ainsel" (3:26 although in the libretto it says 4:58) is a masterpiece and a textbook for keyboard players. Lingam surprise us with avant-garde sounds in "Devo ma non Posso" (6:31). Helden Rune cause real nightmares with "Nocturnal Voices" (6:31), a song that should not be listened to in the solitude of a winter night. Humus combines crimsonian arrogance with 70’s sounds and terror in "El Vampiro" (7:09). Our loved Morte Macabre satisfy our expectations with "Irrealtá di Suoni" (3:11), hails to the mellotron!, like José Nafría would say. The masters Abiogenesi convince us also with "Belfagor" (6:10), a piece in a style similar to "Il Giocoscuro". Il Segno del Commando presents a "Macabro Suite" (9:46) as beautiful as startling, that is followed by a possibly too experimental "Dead of Night" (4:05) by Bevis Fond with excessive voices and dialogues. Do not worry, as Somnambulist come with "Laudenam" (7:46) and show why they are one of the revelations in the prog scene. The quality level is maintained by Una Stagione All´Inferno that surprise with a film-heavy-prog sound in "La Ballata di Carini" (5:08). The Black, one of the darkest bands in the scene are comfortable in their hard-prog 70´s style in "Suspiria et..." (7:01), a prelude to the industrial Gothic nightmare "The Curse of Tot-Anch-Amun" (4:40) put to music by Nekropolis. A macabre vaudeville piano in "Klub 99" (2:40) by Mottorismus is the hall for the uninteresting "Outro" (0:29) of Maethelyah. The trip has finished.

Do you want to know what makes this double Cd a masterpiece? First: the idea, very attractive to be recreated by the progressive genre. Second: the presentation. Third: the bands chosen; there are better and worse pieces, some more lucky and others less so, but it is evident that they have all given their best to scare the listener and to give a test of their composing and instrumental abilities. Fourth: in this large bands list, progheads can check a number of unknown bands that must be kept in mind. And fifth: the illusion; I notice that this double Cd has been made with a lot of ambition and the desire to make it a jewel. This goal has been achieved.
